Broodmares' stakes quinella

05 Dec 2024

La Fluorescent (NZ) became the latest Willow Park-sold broodmare to produce a stakes winner at Wednesday's Doomben meeting, when Oughton took out the Listed Recognition Stakes for Gold Coast trainer Melissa Kelly.

A six-year-old son of More Than Ready (USA) with a slightly unusual racing history, Oughton was a winner at Sandown as a three-year-old before selling to Hong Kong, where he added two more wins to his resume in just eight starts at Sha Tin.

He then returned to Australia, where he has had a further eight starts for three more wins, culminating in Wednesday's Listed victory and taking his earnings to over $746,000.

A $900,000 yearling sold by Lime Country Thoroughbreds at the Magic Million Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Oughton was the fifth highest-priced yearling ever sold in Australia for his Champion sire.

He is the fifth foal from La Fluorescent (General Nediym), who was sold through our 2016 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale draft for $240,000 to Makybe Stud.

At the time of her sale, La Fluorescent (pictured) was carrying her third foal, the Snitzel filly Moldova, who won her first two (of only five) starts racing for Makybe, before running fifth in the Listed Redoute's Choice Stakes at Caulfield. Moldova has since gone on to produce (as her first foal) four-time stakes winner Captured By Love (Written Tycoon), winner of the recent Group 1 1000 Guineas at Riccarton.

La Fluoresecent is the fifth Willow Park-sold broodmare to produce a stakes winner in the 2024/25 season and to make this one more special, Flying Trapeze (Trapeze Artist) made it a quinella for Willow Park mares.

Already stakes placed three times, Flying Trapeze is out of Coromandel (Bernardini), who was sold at the 2019 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale for $80,000 to the bid of Bowness Stud for Bert Vieira, who bred Flying Trapeze.
