BROODMARES

A few years ago, we began to focus more on offering a selection of well-related, young mares in foal to commercial stallions at the broodmare sales annually. From drafts of around 50 mares per year across two broodmare sales, we have begun to see some fantastic racetrack results from progeny of these broodmare sale graduates.

In the 2023-24 racing season, there were 12 stakes winners produced by Willow Park-sold broodmares, including three Group 1 winners. Three further Group 1 winners joined these in the 2024/25 racing season, among eight stakes winners to date. In total, 14 broodmares offered for sale by Willow Park have produced Group 1 winners, including the following in in the past two years:

  • CHAQUINTA [NZ] (High Chaparral) was sold for $120,000 in 2018 carrying her first foal. She is now the dam of Gr1 winner QUINTESSA (Shamus Award).
  • HAPPY PILGRIM (Congrats) was sold for $75,000 in 2018 carrying her first foal. She is now the dam of unbeaten Gr1 winner PRIVATE HARRY (Harry Angel).
  • PARMALOVE (Snitzel) was sold for $230,000 in 2018 carrying her first foal. She has since produced Gr1 winner and NZ Champion Two-Year-Old VELOCIOUS (Written Tycoon) and Listed placed Penvose Lad (U S Navy Flag). Parmalove was on-sold through Inglis Digital in 2024 for $730,000.
  • ZENAIDA [NZ] (Zabeel) was sold for $240,000 in 2021 carrying her fourth foal. Her third foal (a yearling at the time of sale) became triple Gr1 winner SUNSHINE IN PARIS (Invader). Zenaida was on-sold at the 2023 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale for $1.4m, where Sunshine In Paris sold for $3.9m.
  • TEMOLIE (Star Witness) was sold for $130,000 in 2019 carrying her first foal. She is now the dam of Gr1 winner AELIANA (NZ) (Castelvecchio).
  • WHATALOVELYDAY (Domesday) was initially passed in off the track for $125,000, before selling the following year carrying her first foal for $150,000. She has since produced Gr1 winner BENEDETTA (Hellbent) and Gr2 placed Whatafox (Foxwedge).

We aim to offer young mares from progressive families and find great satisfaction in seeing pedigree upgrades and sale ring rewards for new owners of these mares. Some examples of great results from broodmares sold in recent years by Willow Park include:

  • DIAMOND (Fastnet Rock) was sold for $380,000 in 2022 carrying her first foal by So You Think [NZ]. The resulting filly sold for $200,000 as a weanling and Diamond was on-sold in 2023 for $400,000.
  • GHOST OF WAR (Your Song) was sold for $90,000 in 2023 carrying her first foal by St Mark's Basilica [FR]. The resulting colt sold for $220,000 as a yearling.
  • ICE ON FIRE (Shalaa) was sold for $40,000 in 2024. Nine days after the sale, her half-sister Tahnee Tiara produced the Gr1 Queensland Oaks winner, SOCKS NATION.
  • SALEM [FR] (Sea The Stars) was sold for $230,000 in 2024. Two weeks after the sale, her close relative SOSIE [IRE] won the Gr1 Grand Prix de Paris and she has since won another Gr1 and Gr2 in three further starts.
  • TUSCAN HEAT [GB] (Oasis Dream) passed in at auction in 2023 and was later sold online for $190,000. She was carrying her first foal, a Wootton Bassett [GB] colt that sold for $400,000 as a yearling.
