Libertad wins Group 1
02 Dec 2025
A trip to Western Australia resulted in a win at the elite level for Libertad on Saturday, adding a 15th Group 1 winner produced by a Willow Park-sold broodmare.
The five-year-old stallion assured himself a future at stud with Saturday’s win in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) for his owners, led by Trilogy Racing.
Already a winner of three stakes races, Libertad has improved with age and rewarded connections for their decision to keep the entire in work as a five-year-old, taking his earnings to $1.7million in the process.
A son of Russian Revolution, Libertad is the fifth foal produced by Electric Charge, a winning daughter of the wonderful broodmare sire Charge Forward.
Electric Charge was sold at the 2016 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale carrying her first foal, knocked down to Ray Willis’ Rheinwood Pastoral Co. for $200,000.
After selling her first four yearlings for a combined $810,000, Rheinwood capitalised on Libertad’s early stakes success, selling the mare to Trilogy Racing in 2023 for $360,000.
Libertad is the second Group 1 winner the Rheinwood team have bred from Willow Park-sourced broodmares, joining 2025 Gr1 The Galaxy winner Private Harry (Harry Angel [IRE] x Happy Pilgrim).
From a handful of mares Rheinwood have purchased from Willow Park drafts, they have also bred the exciting four-year-old Midnight Dynamite (Pierata x Talented Miss), a stakes placed winner of five who also looks destined for a stakes win.
Willow Park offered 38 broodmares at the 2016 MM Broodmare Sale in what has turned out to be a vintage draft, with 10 of those mares producing stakes horses to date (two of those have thrown two stakes horses each).
Among those stakes horses are three Group 1 winners - Benedetta (Hellbent x Whatalovelyday), Bonham (Per Incanto [USA] x Fortune’s Choice) and Libertad.
