More black type for Uncorked

19 May 2025

Willow Park foaled and raised mare, Uncorked, added more black type to her name on Sunday, finishing second in the Listed Mizdirection Stakes (1308m) at Santa Anita.

Already a Grade 3 winner in the USA, Uncorked is a four-time winner across Australia and North America, with a further three stakes placings to her name up to Gr2 level.

Racing in the Silverdale Farm colours in Australia, Uncorked had nine starts here for a win and two placings. Notably, she ran second to future Golden Slipper winner Fireburn (Rebel Dane) at both of their second starts, indicating her ability early on.

After winning a maiden at Sale at start seven, Uncorked had two further Australian starts before her export to North America, where she has recorded three more wins and seven further placings.

Initially trained at Maryland by Brittany Russell, Uncorked transferred to leading trainer Philip D'Amato in California early last year, ahead of claiming her first stakes victory in the Gr3 Royal Heroine Stakes (1600m).

The five-year-old mare was bred by long-time client Alan Galbraith and sold at Magic Millions in 2021, where she was knocked down to Kestrel Thoroughbreds and Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott Racing for $130,000.

By Pierro, Uncorked is out of the well-related mare Piaf (NZ), who won once at Te Rapa in a five start career. Homebred mare Piaf (Iffraaj) was the penultimate foal from Alan's wonderful mare Arletty (NZ), who counted the Gr2 Villiers Stakes and Gr2 (now Gr1) Queen of the Turf Stakes among her eight wins.

Piaf produced one more foal at Willow Park before returning to New Zealand, where she unfortunately died foaling. Piaf's half-sister, Gr1 producer Axiom (NZ), is a long-time resident of Willow Park and although she is now retired, she has a gorgeous two-year-old filly by Too Darn Hot (GB) yet to race in the Moody Racing stable.
