Quintessa (NZ) claims second Group 1

08 Sep 2025

A brilliant run by Quintessa [NZ] added a second Group 1 win to her record in Saturday's Proisir Plate at Ellerslie, the first Gr1 win of the new season by progeny of a Willow Park-sold broodmare.

Almost a year to the day of her last win in the Gr3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield, the five-year-old mare trailed the Proisir Plate (1400m) field and came widest on the turn, putting the foot down at the 200m to fly past her 15 rivals and win by 1.5L.

Chalking up a sixth career win, Quintessa also claimed the Group 1 Levin Classic (1400m) as a three-year-old and has two further Group 3 victories to her name.

By Rosemont Stud sire Shamus Award, she is the third foal from Chaquinta [NZ], herself a five-time winner by High Chaparral [IRE].

Chaquinta was sold by Willow Park at the 2018 Magic Millions Broodmare Sale for $120,000, to the bid of Rosemont. She produced two foals for Rosemont before being sold again, carrying Quintessa, to Peachester Lodge.

Quintessa was sold as yearling by Wentwood Grange at Karaka Premier for NZ$170,000, knocked down to Te Akau Racing’s David Ellis.

This is a familiar family to Willow Park, that includes two resident broodmares on the farm - Happy Event (in foal to Tassort) and Delusions (in foal to All Too Hard).
