Samangu impressive at Caulfield

26 Feb 2025

Talented mare, Samangu, continued on her winning ways on Saturday, with a dominant, all the way win at Caufield for Grahame Begg.

The lightly raced four-year-old is now a winner of four of her six starts, her latest three wins all at metropolitan level. Having raced once as a two-year-old for a close third place behind Fragile Love (No Nay Never) and subsequent Group 2 winner Grinzinger Belle (NZ) (Shamexpress), Samangu has been a revelation this preparation at four, winning four of her five starts and running third at Flemington by only 0.5L in her only defeat.

By Widden Stud's progressive sire Written By, also trained by Begg, Samangu is the first living foal of unraced Fastnet Rock mare Estelle, a full-sister to Group 1 winner Driefontein. Samangu was offered through our 2022 Inglis Classic draft, where she was knocked down to her trainer and Rohan Hughes Bloodstock for $200,000.

Speaking of well-bred fillies, Motcombs also scored a metropolitan win at Sandown earlier in the week, going back-to-back for Ciaron Maher Racing. The three-year-old daughter of Champion Sire, Snitzel, has won two of her five starts to date in the late Colin McKenna's colours.

Motcombs is the second foal of Listed placed winner of three, Acqume (Sepoy). Sold to her trainer at the 2023 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $950,000, the promising filly is from one of Australia's most successful families, being out of a half-sister to the celebrated mare Hips Don't Lie (Stravinsky).

Acqume has a full-brother to Motcombs bound for the 2025 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, as lot 270. She has another weanling filly by Snitzel and is now in foal to Capitalist.
