Sha Tin win for Great Spirit

02 Oct 2024

On a feature race day at Sha Tin on Tuesday, Willow Park Stud was represented by a new Hong Kong winner in Great Spirit.

The race favourite first up for trainer Dennis Yip, Great Spirit came from back in the field to hit the lead at the 100m, holding on to win by a neck. It was the sixth start for the four-year-old, who was a close second on debut at Sha Tin in February.

Sold at Inglis Classic for $40,000, Great Spirit (American Pharoah) is the first foal and first winner for Hermosa Beach (Magnus), a six-time winner who was placed at stakes level.

Regally bred, Hermosa Beach is a half-sister to Gr1 Flight Stakes winner Pontal Lass (Marauding) and US Gr3 winner River Majesty (Majestic Light). They are out of celebrated broodmare Pier [USA] (Riverman), who produced 13 foals to race for 13 winners, six of whom gained black type.

Hermosa Beach has a yearling colt by Russian Revolution bound for the 2025 Inglis Classic Sale and is due to foal later this month to Capitalist.

The feature race of the day at Sha Tin was the Gr3 The National Day Cup Handicap, which saw Magic Control, formerly known as Archo Nacho in Australia, finish second at his third Hong Kong start.

A dual stakes winner in Australia, Magic Control (Sioux Nation) is a product of the Willow Park-sold broodmare Jackpot Queen (Not A Single Doubt), and we are excited to see him gain more black type in Hong Kong!
